Takesi Trail

Pre-Columbian road linking the Andean highlands with the Bolivian Yungas

Overview

The Takesi has been honored as a Cultural, Historical, Architectural, and Archaeological Heritage site of La Paz, standing as one of the best-preserved pre-Hispanic trails. Its origins date back to the Formative Period, and it was further developed during the peak of the Tiwanaku culture and the Inca Empire. Walking these paths is to immerse oneself in the history of the peoples who inhabited this region, using these routes for the exchange of goods from the highlands to the valleys and tropical lands.

Without a doubt, the greatest thrill lies in immersing oneself in the solemnity of the Andean landscapes and sharing authentic experiences with the people who call this territory home.

Day 1 – LA PAZ – SAN FRANCISCO MINE – CACAPI

We will depart from La Paz heading to Choquecota (3,900 m) in a private vehicle, with an estimated travel time of two and a half hours. From there, we will begin our hike, passing through the San Francisco Mine and enjoying the majestic landscape of Mururata. We will then ascend to the Apacheta at 4,800 m, where the weather will become cooler.

We will descend through the rugged mountain terrain until we reach the picturesque village of Takesi, primarily inhabited by llama and alpaca herders. We will continue our journey along a trail surrounded by lush vegetation until we arrive at the peaceful community of Cacapi, where we will spend the night.

Day 2 – CACAPI – CHOJLLA VILLAGE

We will wake up early to enjoy an energizing breakfast before continuing our hike. We will descend into increasingly tropical and lush valleys, crossing rivers and marveling at the stunning views of the lower valleys. It will take us the entire day to reach the mining village of Chojlla, where our trek will conclude, and we will take our private vehicle back to La Paz.
