Overview

This summit is relatively unpopular because its route is considered one of the most difficult in Bolivia. Despite this, it is an exceptionally beautiful mountain journey, reserved exclusively for experienced and astute mountaineers. Throughout the entire route, climbers will face technical and demanding challenges. The ridge leading to the summit presents extreme difficulty and significant exposure, requiring careful focus and advanced skills to ensure a safe ascent.

D E T A I L S

Day 1.
La Paz – Sorata – Lacatya

This full day will be dedicated to vehicle transport. We will depart early from La Paz, descending into the beautiful Sorata Valley. After lunch in Sorata, we will continue our journey to the community of Lacatya, where we will set up our first camp at 4,200 meters above sea level.

Day 2.
Lacatya – Aguas Calientes

After a revitalizing breakfast, we will begin a short hike to our second camp in the area known as Aguas Calientes, located at 4,850 meters above sea level. During this 3-hour hike, on a clear day, we will enjoy stunning views of the majestic Illampu massif.

Day 3.
Aguas Calientes – High Camp

Today, we will reach our high camp at 5,600 meters above sea level. The route will begin among moraines and rocky areas, ascending to higher terrain. The campsite will be located a short distance along the glacier, with a hiking time of approximately 5 hours.

Day 4.
High Camp – Luz Summit (6,360 m) – Base Camp (Aguas Calientes)

This day will be demanding and will require an early start. After a 2-hour hike to the base of the wall, we will begin climbing the ice wall, which will reach inclinations of up to 60° over a distance of 300 meters.

We will continue ascending until we reach the summit of Illampu, where the panoramic view will be simply breathtaking. After a brief rest, we will begin the long descent along the same route back to base camp, with an estimated duration of 14 to 16 hours.

Day 5.
Aguas Calientes – Lacatya – Sorata – La Paz

In the morning, after breakfast, we will begin the ascent to the Illampu Pass. From there, we will continue descending to the bottom of Lacatya, where our vehicle will be waiting to take us back first to Sorata and finally to the city of La Paz.
