Overview

Ancohuma, located in the northern section of the Cordillera Real in the Andes, east of Lake Titicaca, lies just south of Illampú and a bit lower, near the town of Sorata. Despite its greater altitude compared to Illampú, Ancohuma has a less steep profile, making it a relatively more accessible climb.

D E T A I L S

Day 1.
LA PAZ – SORATA
We will depart from La Paz to the picturesque town of Sorata, situated at 2,900 m above sea level, on a 4-hour private vehicle journey. Sorata, with its lush subtropical vegetation, offers a fascinating contrast to the imposing Illampu massif. We will spend the night in a cozy hotel in the town.

Day 2.
SORATA – CHILLATA LAGOON

After breakfast, we will head to the village of Kolani and continue ascending to our first campsite at Chillata Lagoon, located at 4,204 m above sea level. This trekking day will take approximately 6-7 hours.

Day 3.
CHILLATA LAGOON – GLACIAR LAGOON
On this day, we will cross the Titisani Pass at 4,400 m above sea level, pass near some mines, and then walk through moraines and rocky areas until we reach the Glacial Lagoon, situated at 5,036 m above sea level, where we will set up our camp.

Day 4.
GLACIAR LAGOON – HIGH CAMP

We will begin the ascent to the High Camp, located at 5,600 m above sea level, walking through rocky moraines that will lead us to the glacier by the end of the day.

Day 5.
HIGH CAMP – ANCOHUMA SUMMIT – GLACIAR LAGOON

From the High Camp, we will complete the ascent to the summit of Ancohuma, which rises to 6,427 m above sea level, in approximately 5 hours. Then, we will descend along the same route back to the Glacial Lagoon.

Day 6.
GLACIAR LAGOON – SORATA – LA PAZ

From the base camp, we will return to the Titisani Pass and finally reach the community of Kolani, where our vehicle will be waiting to take us back to La Paz.
